Step 1: Diagnose the Problem

A. Identify the Loose Parts

Wobble in the Handle/Knob: Usually caused by a loose spindle screw.

Misaligned Deadbolt: Usually caused by a strike plate problem.

Shift in the entire lock: The mounting plate may have fallen off.

B. Test for Security Vulnerabilities

Insert the key and shake gently – more than 2 mm of wobble indicates urgent repair is needed.

Check the door frame for impact marks (a sign of forced entry)

Step 2: Tighten the Lock – 3 Proven Methods

Method 1: Fix a Loose Door Handle/Knob

Locate the Set Screw: Usually located below the handle loop (Hex Wrench Size: 2.5-3 mm)

Apply threadlocker to tighten the threads (to prevent future loosening)

Tighten clockwise until tight (8-10 inch-pounds of torque). Over-tightening can cause the threads to strip!

Pull Handle Test

Method 2: Stabilize a wobbly deadbolt

Remove strike plate screws.

Insert nylon spacers (for wood doors) or steel spacers (for metal doors).

Reinstall with 3-inch security screws – penetrate door frame for extra pick resistance.

Method 3: Full lock reinforcement

For locks that repeatedly loosen:

Replace standard ¾-inch screws with 4-inch mounting bolts

Fill screw holes with epoxy wood filler (wait 2 hours before re-drilling)

Step 3: Prevent future problems

Maintenance Checklist

√Semi-annual inspection: Tighten screws and use lubricating graphite spray

√ Weatherproof: In humid climates, apply silicone sealant around the lock
